increasing the volume

Post by BarryWorm » Sun Jun 21, 2020 9:33 pm

Ive had my worry 3 or 4 months now, they have settled well and seem to be rapidly chomping through almost any food i put in there. is it just a case of keep adding more food and paper/card and the mass of bedding for them to live in will grow? or should I be adding other stuff to help them?

Congratulations on having setup a productive worm bin.
It sounds like by now you should have added your second tray, if not it may be worth considering. You may be able to harvest your first tray, if you have not already done so, anytime soon.
Worms appreciate a diverse diet so try to provide a wide range of food stuff.
The only other thing to add to your bin is some fine grit. Worms use this in their gizzard to grind up bits of food they may take in. Some people say used coffee grounds do the job but most use finely ground eggshell (I do mine in a old coffee grinder) for this. About a level tablespoon once a month will be plenty. The other thing you can use is “budgie” sand used or fresh.

Keep up the good work stay safe

Thanks Willy,

Ive enjoyed reading a lot of the information you have put up in your many hundred answers! Im already debating a second wormery as still putting a lot of scraps etc through other routes as there seems a fine line between over and under feeding the worms.

Hi, the best and safest way of feeding the correct amount is the “four corner method”. It will prevent over feeding if followed with care. Worms food requirements vary a lot dependent on a number of things such as temperature and weather. If you can’t find it on the forum let me know.

Stay safe
Willy
