Re the wood shavings, you will find they are much slower to break down than your shredded paper and cardboard, so I would not overload you bin with them. Some people say worms are not keen on soft wood because of disinfectant eliment of pine, but like most things with worms try a little and see. Your worms will love the dropping and left over food from the cage.
Plastic getting into the bin is a pain, it will not do any damage but it looks so unsightly and there is no easy way to remove it. All you can do is pick out the pieces when you see them or ignor them.

Raw cauliflower and courgette seem to be a hit with mine! Chopped up really finely so that it's very moist, almost liquidised but not quite. I get excited about varying their diet, though - they'll get some sprouts in next feed! Was pleased to find them all gathered merrily (?!) around the food corner this morning in spite of very cold temps last night, so seems my rather haphazard looking insulation is really helping (scrunched up paper around bin held loosely in place with a sort of cardboard shield, then all draped in bubble wrap and towels to form a kind of tent around it, with air gaps - all inside the shed) Have to say these little creatures bring me great joy! :)

Are you buying your worms individual Christmas presents or getting them a group one??? It sounds very much like you are enjoying your herd. They won’t complain about the look of the insulation you are using. They will be very grateful in the temps at the moment. Mine are in the greenhouse I just went to check them and it’s minus 1c at the moment (4pm).
I found a pile of apples (windfalls I think) in our local woods so my herd are feasting on them at the moment. You are so right it’s very important to vary your worms diet.

Have fun

Well it's just so hard to know what to get them. What do you buy the worm who has everything? I think socks are out of the question....
Thanks for all the support here, Willy! Lots of tips and advice to pick up on. I'll be looking out for windfall apples for my herd too.

Socks are a great present for your worms, provided they are made of a natural fibre such as: wool, cotton or bamboo. Just cut the elastic part off and put the rest into your worm bin, the worms won’t mined even if there not washed 😊😊😊 waste not want not.

That reminds me of when I had a mouse problem. They (the mice) destroyed a lot of household stuff like curtains etc that they trashed, probably for bedding, including some linen tea towels ... the worms enjoyed those tea towels judging by the fact that there was nothing left after a wee while, so .... yes, even natural fabrics can go in the wormery. I never tried the curtains as i was unsure of the fabric content, plus, they were a bit on the huge size :)

BTW, I never actually 'fed' them the tea towel, I just used it as a cover on top of the wormery, but it only lasted a few months before it was more holes than fabric so I just left them to it.

Fed the critters been tops and tails, but not a huge amount of action yet, perhaps they are still a little too fresh and need to breakdown a bit....

I found a totally brown and soft apple at the back of the fridge. Cut the bottom off and popped it in a corner, excited to see how they deal with it. Last week had some nice soft parsnip/celeriac which had been used to make a soup stock, they absolutely loved that and were swarming all over it!

Love the thought of swarming worms! :) Mine certainly like apples so hope yours was a hit too. I mash up leftover pieces of apple into a purée and mix with whatever else I'm giving them, it seems to help that break down quickly. A current favourite mash-up seems to be red cabbage (chopped up small) with the apple mush - the apple sort of pickles it and it actually smells delicious; the worms make short work of it. Might have to dish some up for a human Christmas lunch too...

Today I fed my worms an apple pie which had a bad soggy bottom, in fact it was more of a wet nappy than a soggy bottom. Hope they enjoy it.

Happy Christmas all
