My wormery is full of flying insects. Picture attached. What are they and how do I get rid of them?

Gnats i think. If you put some clean cardboard as a layer over your top feeding tray it will probably deter them.

Not sure what the insects are, flys of this sort are often just termed “fruit flys”. The way to deal with the issue is to put a good layer, an inch (3cm) or more, of dry shredded paper or card over the top of the bin surface. Try not to disturb, not even to feed, for two or three days. When feeding resumes make sure you disturb the surface as little as possible and you bury the food and cover with new shredded paper. It may take a week for the flys to disappear. Good luck please let us know how you get on.

Stay safe

They flew off and have not returned. I suspect I created the problem myself by putting a dead bouquet in the wormery - I would normally have taken that sort of thing to the local tip, but the tip was closed because of lockdown and the rubbish collections went haywire. My suspicion is that the eggs were on the stems or leaves and simply hatched out in the wormery.
