Hello, I am new to keeping worms and was wondering if anyone knows why some of my worms like escaping to the bottom which they seem to stay until i put them back. What could be the reason? i have followed the guide on here and ones i have seen on youtube.
I have newspaper and cardboard at the bottom which is moist.
Worms escaping to the bottom.
Re: Worms escaping to the bottom.
Hi Reigan, worms when first moved tend to wander a lot, maybe they are exploring much like we do when we go to stay in a new place. When you think about it the bottom sump tray meets the worms needs for moisture, darkness and food (from the liquid) so it’s a natural place for them to go.
Some worms may find it difficult to get back to the main tray, no worms can jump, so may not be able to reach the bottom of the lower tray. You can help by placing a small sponge in the sump which will provide a “ladder back up to the next tray.
The barrier in the bottom proper tray should be one snug fitting piece of paper or cardboard.
