Hi Jed. If you have a lot of “browns” (paper, cardboard, leaves, old potting compost etc) already in your bin then you don’t need to put it in every time you feed. However you should put some “dry” browns in with the food if they are wet. Doing this will balance the moisture level and help to prevent your bin going anaerobic (without oxygen). I never use damp/wet browns once a bin is established.

Jed you are not a pest for asking questions.

Thank you for that. It was just that the instructions said to always put food under paper to keep away from fruit flies etc. Would you recommend some old carpet or not do anything different?

Hi Jed, when I fed my herd I scoop a hole in the bedding in the tray and put the food at the bottom I then replace the bedding I had removed on top.

If you are having trouble with fruit flys you could put a sheet of newspaper or cardboard on the top of the bedding but if you cover food like I said above you should not need it.

👍 Thanks Willy, I’ll try that with the next feed. I don’t mind trial and error as long as I don’t cause any harm to my worms - I’m getting quite maternal!

Just don’t try naming all your worms nor celebrating individual worms birthdays :)

I’ll bear that in mind. I was struggling to decide whether to give them girls or boys names anyhow 😂

Every worm has both important parts so it won’t matter if you use girls or boys names 😉
