Have you checked the sump in case they have gone lower down ?

and yes they are cannibals - when they die they do eventually eat themselves. It doesn't take long for a worm to compost down, because they are a high percentage of water

The wastage rate - do you mean the amount that die ... shouldn't be many - a low percentage, sometimes a few die in transit (especially in the summer time when the courier vans overheat) but they quickly make themselves at home and start to reproduce.

Its strange that they have gone, they are definatly not huddled in a corner or living under the wormery, or under a flower pot located nearby ?
