traveling with worms

Post by Marymary » Sat Aug 13, 2016 2:24 pm

Hi,

Does anyone know about traveling by air with worms? I live in a place with no worm suppliers and need a tub of them brought over to me from the UK. Would that work? In the carryon, or packed in the suitcase for the hold? The trip is about 8 hours door to door. Also how would the worms need to be cared for in the interim between arrival from the supplier and departure for the airport? Thanks.

Hi
you can carry them on board the plane - however it does depend on which country you are going to.
There isn't generally a problem within the EU ....

Worms are many different distantly related animals that typically have a long cylindrical tube-like body and no limbs. Worms vary in size from microscopic to over 1 metre in length for marine polychaete worms In biology, "worm" refers to an obsolete taxon (vermes) used by Carolus Linnaeus and Jean-Baptiste Lamarck for all non-arthropod invertebrate animals, and stems from the Old English word wyrm. Most animals called "worms" are invertebrates, but the term is also used for the amphibian caecilians and the slow worm Anguis, a legless burrowing lizard. Invertebrate animals commonly called "worms" include annelids (earthworms), nematodes (roundworms), platyhelminthes (flatworms), marine polychaete worms (bristle worms), marine nemertean worms ("bootlace worms"), marine Chaetognatha (arrow worms), priapulid worms, and insect larvae such as grubs and maggots.

Just to clarify, we did travel with the worms and it was very successful. The company said they would add a bit of extra bedding and sent them to the UK address byovernight courrier, where they were held in that original packaging for two days in a shaded garage, then stashed into a suitcase for another day and a half, and then checked into the hold for the flight, and were not opened until the next day after arrival, when they were found to be vigorous and happy. Now they have been in their new premises for about two weeks and are eating up a storm.

Glad they reached the destination successfully.
We have had worms flown to Africa, all over Europe - even the northernmost tip of Norway.

Well done Mary glad it worked out for you. How many thousand work tickets did you have to buy?
