Yes you will need to put a cover over the top to prevent the rain getting in - a dustbin lid should do the job
Unfortunatly the can-o-worms was created for the Australian climate and has the air holes in the lid, which isn't great for our poor english worms who get very wet each time it rains, as does the compost
