Every time I open the lid of my worm bin, a million flies fly out. Is this normal?

No
not nice for you, but the flies (probably fruit flies) will not hurt the worms and will help compost the food.

Best thing to do is to ensure that the food is covered by paper - if its really bad cover with some compost - to stop the flies laying their eggs.

Surprised to see them so early - though it has been warm !

Thanks Ronnie. They don't really bother me, I just wanted to make sure that they weren't causing any harm. X

What made all my worms suddenly want to escape last night?

I don't know, did they have an argument with each other ?

Very funny but not very helpful. Whenever I open the lid, hundreds of worms are attached to it. I always put them back in the bin but next time, there they are again. I know this can't be right so
what can be so wrong in there to make them all want to commit hari-kari??
