Did your wormery smell, usually when it goes anerobic its because too much food has been added.
however you mentioned that you mixed up the contents a few days before.
Was there any possibility that something was added to the wormery that caused the worms to die, as usually if you have other trays going the worms move out to get away from it.....

Definatly sounds as if they were overfed, especially i it really smelt bad.

make sure that you slow down the feeding especially in the winter - as the worms don't process food as quickly in the cold weather

yes get rid of the manky stuff, and start again, you might find surviving worms and eggs - which means once all the smelly stuff is gone they will start to breed again
