Mass worm wander after 12 days

Post by mj2022 » Sun Oct 16, 2022 8:00 am

Morning All.
Set my wormery up 4th Oct and tried the "leave it in the cardboard box it was delivered in". Had massive worm wander that night....
Next night tried the "black plastic bin liner" method... Again mass wander.
So, for the last 10 days or so I have reverted to leaving a light on over the wormery at night... no wander at all...

Last night(15/10) I decided to leave the light off......
By 23:00, mass wander again....

Wormery set up as per instructions, (damp cardboard, shredded paper, garden soil)... so am at a loss as to what is still not right !!!
Any suggestions greatly appreciated

The first week or two are always the most difficult. I would relax, leave the light on for another three or four days and try again.
The worm suppliers seem to sort out the most difficult noncompliant worms for people just starting out. But you have arrived at the answer 😊😊😊
Good luck please let us know how it goes.

Hello,

I'm sorry to intrude on this topic, but I'm very interested in your feedback. I'm planning to install a dewormer soon, so any information will be helpful.

No problems.....
I think I may just be unfortunate in how long my worms are taking to settle....
Will take willyworm's advice and give things a few days longer...
Will post back on here (probably at the weekend) and let you know the results...

I’m not sure what you mean by a “dewormer” therefore not sure I can be of any help.

Am at last claiming victory over my wandering worms...
Last night I put the wormery in its new winter home just outside the back door, and as far as I can tell I still have active worms this morning..
Thankyou willyworm, patience is indeed a virtue (although I must add I also added a handful of fallen autumn leaves to the bin last week to see if that helped)...

Worm keeping will never be the same again. The first week or so is always the worst.

Well done and good luck
Will

PS you may need to think of some precautions to protect your bin from the rain if it is to stay outside over winter 🙃🙃🙃 🌦🌧⛈❄️

WillyWorm
Sorry never got back to you..
The worm bin is outside but in plastic greenhouse, so rain water ingress was not an issue
happy to report no escape attempts over last 3 months, and have noticed cocoons in the bin since late November...
