Large colony of small worms in wormery lid.

Post by Alphalima » Wed Sep 22, 2021 9:28 am

Hi all,

Hoping someone might be able to identify these worms that have begun appearing in my wormery lid.

Wormery has been set up for about six months, all running smoothly. However I’ve started seeing masses of small white/clear worms inside the roof of the wormery. I’ve attached some photos, would really appreciate if someone could identify them and let me know if they’re something I should be concerned about?

Many Thanks,

Alex

Hi Alex, what you are seeing are “pot worms” (Enchytraeids) they a a small earth worm which are perfectly harmless to you and in your bin and in fact they help with the composting process. A large number of Pot worms can indicate that the PH in the bin is a little high and/or the bin is running a little wet, you could add a little crushed egg shell, may be a spoonful a week until you get the numbers under control, never add to much in one go. If the bin seem too wet add shredded corrugated cardboard and fluff (mix it in) the bin up.

Hope that helps, there is nothing to panic about, please let us know how you get on.

Hi Willy,

Thanks for your response, I’ll be sure to add some eggshells and it does seem a little on the damp side in there so I’ll start adding more shredded carboard. Good to know they’re harmless and are contributing to composting!

Thanks, Alex
