❓Used water filter contents? Can it be used in worm bedding?

Post by Kevski2 » Fri Jul 30, 2021 11:15 am

Hello Guys n Gals
Can anyone tell me if it’s okay to add the activated carbon from a used Britta filter to a worm bin.
My line of thought is it would add grit. If the grit goes through our friends and none of it is ingested then any impurities won’t do any harm.
Can anyone let me know if I’m alright to do this please.
Thank you for reading, I hope to hear from you soon.
Cheers Kev. 👍🍻

I don’t know! I was away in my motor home last week and had to change a water filter. When I got home I was not sure if it was suitable or not and did not put it in my worm bin. I can see no reason why it should not go in but I have never seen it mentioned on any site. If you do use yours please let us know.

The problem could be what they use to purify the water!! Tap water contains chlorine, which may not kill worms but will kill many of the bacteria and microbes that the worms eat. I found little info on the packaging of my new filter as to what it contained and what it did not, which is why I did not use it in the worm bin. My first thought was that charcoal would be good for the worm bin and the allotment, then I chickened out and put it in the rubbish bin.

Thank you for your replies.
I’m going to try it out slowly and watch.
I will certainly post any results I find, one way or another.
Thanks again. Ta Ta For Now.

Hi
I said that I’d let you know how it went using the contents of used water filter cartridges.
From what I can tell there’s no problem with them at all.
I can’t see any I’ll effects from adding them to the bin.
Cheers Kev.

Thanks Kev for the update. I was reading the other day that they contain activated charcoal therefore they should be good for the worms and the garden. If anybody can add some more info on this it would be good.
