How do I know my wormery is healthy?

Hi,

I've had my wormery for about a month now and it smells good and I feel I am feeding them little but sensible quantities as I begin to use the corner method.

Could I ask how do I know if it is doing well as I don't have any odours and it seems slightly damp, which I believe is good. However, when I go to check on them they don't seem to be 'buzzing with movement' and they look quite light coloured and lethargic - is this something to be concerned about? How can I reassure myself that they are happy and healthy?

Thanks,

Chris

Hi, well done, sounds like you have made a great start to keeping worms.
You have ticked most of the boxes on the worm bin MOT. Check for smells (should be nothing unpleasant) ensure the correct moisture level(just damp) monitor food consumption (the four corners will do this). If you can maintain the above your worms should remain health. Having had them for a moth or so now you should be seeing cocoons, now or very soon, which will indicate a growing healthy herd.

Please keep us updated

Hi, just wanted to add something I've discovered in recent months prompted by your lovely words about worms 'buzzing with movement'! I read somewhere (can't remember where, perhaps it was here?) that bran helps to increase our worms' vigour and breeding instincts so I've been adding just a sprinkle to about one in every four feeds in warm weather and it's really noticeable how they respond to it. They go mad for it! When I check the corner with the added bran in the worms look particularly active and healthy looking - if worms can be perky then that's how I think of them! I think of it as their Summer tonic - might be worth a try for your wormbin too?

Hi thanks for that, I will give it a try, don’t think I’ve heard that before but it’s got to be worth a try.

Thanks Willy

Hi Willy and thanks - would be interested to know how it works for your worms too, hopefully puts a spring in their slither!

Hi smallthings, just fed a bin of European Night Crawlers with some bran. I must say they looked very fit and active before I fed them so it will be interested to see what affect it has on them.
Will let you know how it goes.

Hi Willy, hope they enjoy it! I sprinkled a little in mine yesterday afternoon and they are all over it this morning.

Hi mine are tucking into the bran no problem. Not sure they look fitter or healthier but will use it a few more time and see then.
