Worms keep heading south

This is one question I cant answer.
normally the reasons are because its too cold, in the wild worms go down into the ground where its warmer and snow/ice doesnt form.
why they do this in a moderate temperature I can't answer - however they usually continue to live happily there. the weedblanket should work though
