Out of space!

Post by WiggleWiggleWiggle » Fri Sep 29, 2017 11:36 am

Turns out a 3 tray wormery isn't big enough for a single person household if that single person is a vegan with a little vegetable garden :'-(. I started the wormery off at end of June, and have just had to empty my first tray (filled in July) into a bucket to finish off. With autumn's dead veggie plants to go in, there's no way August's tray will be finished in time to use before this one's full again.

Pretty please will Wormcity send me a voucher so I can justify buying another tray or two? Because it's so much more expensive to buy a tray plus postage than if I'd just bought a bigger wormery in the first place, and I did follow your web page advice for small households and get 3 trays. I promise to tell everyone how awesome your wormerys are, because my little wriggly pals are very happy and doing a great job and the wormery looks set to give me many years of happy gardening.

Any other small households who grow a few veggies and eat a lot more: don't make my mistake, just go straight to the biggest value pack you can afford, you won't regret it! ;-)
P.S. if I can upgrade to Wormery 100 or 125 value, get the extra worms, extra trays, and book, and just pay the difference, I'd love you forever and tell all my friends. But I know that's a big ask and I'm already being cheeky. So a voucher to cover postage for another tray would be ok.

Hi
Can you  Email Me or send me a PM with your postcode / order number and exactly what you want (either more trays , or trays + value pack)  and I will try sort something out.

Be thankful you bought the Wormcity 3 tray from us.  the volume is 75.6 litres.
If you had bought one of our competitors imported wormeries you would only have 46.5 Litres of space !!!!!!

Hi wiggle, could part of the problem be the fact that you are putting garden waste into your worm bin. My understanding is that wormbins handle kitchen waste and turn it into premium castings and that general garden waste goes in to the compost bin, in the garden. I filled an empty, standard black compost bin to overflowing with garden waste the other day after a quick autumn tidyup, even a five tray setup could not handle that. Wormbins can and will breakdown garden waste but won't have the capacity to deal with it all.

Good luck
Willy

Thanks Willy, and good point. My garden is very small with just a few veggies growing in planters, so I don't have space or enough waste for a normal compost bin, which is why I decided a worm composter would make a handy compact and fast way to make the most of everything and let me stop buying fertiliser. But you're right that I'm asking a lot of my wriggly pals. I'm filling about one tray a month usually, so hopefully an extra tray or two will happily solve my autumn 'waste-flow' problems, especially once it's fully into the swing of things with maximised worm population :-).

Thank you <3. PM sent. I'm very glad I got a Wormcity one and not a smaller inferior one! :-)

Yea you your worms will soon be up to speed. Have you considered a "worm tower" a search on You Tube will give you lots of examples. They are great for small spaces and can be used to "precompost" the garden wasted before putting it into your worm bin. This will speed up your system.

I've thrown money at the problem Willy, and am upgrading to a 125L composter, with some extra worms to speed things up too :-). Oh, and the book so I can learn about more things to worry me ;-). I might start complaining I don't have enough waste next and be begging the neighbours for scraps lol!

Not sure additional trays and worms will solve your problem! You see there is a limit as to how many worms can be accomodated in a bin, this is based on the surface area of the top tray, it's approximately 1,000 worms per square foot, so a wormcity bin will hold approximately 2,000 worms! 2,000 worms weigh approximately one kilo. We have all read that worms can eat there own wieght of food in a day however this level of consumption is not possible for most of us with small stacking bin systems ;( given good temperature and moisture levels then we may manage to get our worms eating half their own weight, i.e half a kilo. But remember worms eat their bedding as well as the food we provide, therefore with the ideal conditions your worms may eat one third of a kilo of food you put in each day, I hate to say but it's difficult to maintain ideal conditions so food consumption may be lower.
Good luck
