Re: Starting up a Second Wormery
Hi Red, lilwriggler makes a good point about having two wormeries possibly with worms trying to get out, this is not common and the likelihood of it happening can be reduced by using one of the tray from your first in the new shiny sweet smelling bin. I believe one of the reasons worms try to escape...

Re: Using Spent Compost
Lilwriggler, If you can add more bedding I think you will find an improvement in the volume and quality of your castings and an increase in the worm population.
Good luck, I really would like to hear how it goes.

Re: Using Spent Compost
Hi Red, I use a mix of bedding materials, shredded paper and cardboard, spent potting compost, a little sawdust, one of my favourites is woodland floor litter and humus from around old long fallen trees. I tend to view bedding as an opportunity to increase the bio diversity of my bin and therefore t...

Re: Using Spent Compost
Hi Red, you seem to be ticking all the boxes. To fill and finish the first tray normally takes 4 or 5 months. It takes that long to build up the beneficial/balanced eco system needed to breakdown the scraps within the bin. After the fist tray with good management you should be able to harvest a tray...

Re: Using Spent Compost
Hi Lilwriggler, That’s interesting, I find plan brown corrugated cardboard breaks down quickly and easily. Cereal boxes and the like take an age to get started to break down I tend not to use them in my worm bin nor out door compost bins.

Re: Using Spent Compost
Hi, the root will rot down and become food for your worms when you put the compost into your worm bin, they may take a while to break down but you can always sieve the compost if you want to use it before the root is all gone. Dependent upon what you are growing you may want to put a small amount of...

Re: Thinking about getting a wormery - stuff that can be added
Hi Christina, welcome to the world of worms. The answer to your questions is yes, yes, yes and yes. The only problem with using any animal poo is if they are carnivores and have a digestive system similar a humans. In our every day life’s that means cats and dog (cats poo is particularly dangerous) ...

Re: Newbe to the wonderful world of worms.
Hi welcome to the world of worms. Congratulations it sounds like you have made a great start to worm farming by managing to keep your herd from wondering every night. Over feeding is the biggest mistake most newbies make at the beginning of their apprenticeship in the art of vermicomposting. We have...

Re: worms all gone!
Hi, sorry to hear your news. It only needs your bin to be getting a little more direct sun/heat for it to make the difference between life and death for worms. Well done with the school bin you must be a good influence on the way it’s set up and fed. Most school bins, I know, get little or no carbon...

Re: worms all gone!
Sorry to hear your news. Yes I think it will have been the heat. Hot is more of a problem than freezing weather and can kill worms in a couple of hours. Yes you can buy replacement worms contact Wormcity via the “shop” on the web site, I’m sure Ronny will sort it out for you. If it is still very hot...
