Re: Starting up a Second Wormery
Hi Red, thanks for your update, everything seems to be going along swell. You have a wide diversity of bedding materials in use, which I think is a good thing. Many people look for diversity when feeding their worms but miss the opportunity to introduce more diversity in the form of bedding. I agree...

Re: Hope everyone's worms ok in the cold snap
Hi Smallthing, glad your herd survived. I had some worms in a plastic garden storage box, I wrapped them in bubble wrap and night and morning tacked one or two four pint milk containers of hot water under the bubble wrap. Worms are very resilient the more brown material you can get in your bin to ac...

Re: Mass worm wander after 12 days
Worm keeping will never be the same again. The first week or so is always the worst.
Well done and good luck

PS you may need to think of some precautions to protect your bin from the rain if it is to stay outside over winter 🌦🌧⛈

Re: Mass worm wander after 12 days
The first week or two are always the most difficult. I would relax, leave the light on for another three or four days and try again. The worm suppliers seem to sort out the most difficult noncompliant worms for people just starting out. But you have arrived at the answer 😊😊😊 Good luck please let us ...

Re: Starting up a Second Wormery
There is no realistic way of counting worms but but if you can weigh your worms with very little bedding then 1lb/500g equals approx 1000 worms. But for our purpose a guesstimate is good enough.
Good luck with the new bin

Re: Starting up a Second Wormery
Your plan is good and I’m sure it will work. There are lots of reasons for escapees with your first venture into worm keeping most of which are overcome by your worms being used to their environment. The only thing I would try would be to add a little food and bedding to the now empty top tray this ...

Re: Starting up a Second Wormery
In that case you could go bin only and allow a slower population growth or buy more worms for faster growth. I have 7 bins and have only ever in ten year’s bought one lot of worms with my first bin. Maybe I’m a meany.
