When I first started up, l did what Ronnie suggested above and put a barrier between my first tray and the sump. I used newspaper which held together long enough for my herd to get used to there new home. The other thing you can do is put a washing-up sponge in the sump this can help the worms, by g...

RE: Potatoes

RE: when to feed
Hi again Pete. In his book Pilkington also says vermicalture is not a science but an art. Meaning there are no hard and fast rules. I use a method of feeding which is pretty fool proof (it needs to be for me). I call it the four corner feed. I start feeding in one corner by pulling back the bedding ...

RE: mould on food

After going through the grinder much more of the surface area of the food will be expose which means the microbes and bacteria can get on with their part in the composting proceess. A little mould is no big problem but dont let it get out of hand. If yo...

RE: Clematis shoots
Your worms will happily eat your clematis but if you have a lot of shoots it may take a while. Composting may be a better idea for some of it.

RE: Checking bottom layers
One other thing about kitty pellets is they are made of very fine saw dust and when wetted can form a crust which can stop air flow and prevent oxygen getting to the worms which in turn leads to our friend anorobic conditions.
