Re: It isnt really working
Hi Rachel Don't get disheartened, as what you have done so far is correct. You are probably right, during the winter months worms don't eat or breed that much, therefore adding too much food at that time can easily cause problems. The food ends up rotting and becomes smelly and anerobic, so by putti...

Re: shredded Paper
Worms have been used for years to composts large amounts of paper pulp, and thrive on it Ive never heard of worms being killed from the bleaches used when whitening paper The life cycle of Dendrobaena veneta was studied to assess the potential of breeding this species for the fish-bait market. Re: shredded Paper
Hi Jane
You can use any shredded paper, virtually all inks are made from vegetable dyes now, so don't pose any threat to your worms.
The only paper you can't use is wrapping paper that has tiny pieces of metal in it
Hope that helps

Re: Escapists
hi your worms will only try to escape during the night, so if you can get a bin liner, then great. otherways to prevent worm loss (if they are in the shed or garage) is to leave a light on, alternatively if you have a box big enoughto place the wormery in, will prevent the worms from going too far. ...

Re: New Wormery - The great escape
Hi
Little terrors aren't they !
Some people don't have any escapees, others have loads.
They should settle down in the next few days - and start behaving themselves.

Hi....
Your worms shouldn't be either dead or comatose....
they should be wriggling and happy.
so not sure what has affected them in this way....
We will send you some more out in tomorrows post, that will be hopefully more lively
regards
ronnie

Re: Ecoli & Salmonella
Hi James Thanks for your question... Im not an expert on this, but from what research is available - Its stated that worms don't carry any pathogens (Any micro-organism that causes disease) themselves, but there is actually a growing body of evidence to suggest that worms (specifically composting wo...

Re: Hello
its true by cutting up the food give the microbes more surface area to start decomposing the food, and therefore it composts down faster.
Freezing and cooking vegetables also help to make the food compost down quicker

Hi Linda Welcome to the forum... It sounds to me like your little wigglers, have been a bit active in another department ;) ;) ;) perhaps with that very small bit of warmer weather that we had the worms eggs have hatched and you are now welcoming the next generation. Enjoy them whilst they are young...

Re: Lid questions
Hi
leave the lid on - your worms have loads of air - its only if you have problems with an aerobic wormery, and need the extra air to remove the bad conditions
