Re: Mould on paper
Thanks for that insight about our herds eating habits, opened my eyes into the principles of why we feed them what we do and why in winter everything works a bit slower

Re: Damaged worms
Everything seems a bit happier now and there are a large number of worms having fun in the bit of compost I added. No more dead worms and saw a baby one in the lid so they are breeding. I’m going to partially line the bottom insulation tray with some newspaper I think to reduce the casts dropping in...

Re: Damaged worms
It’s in the garage by the door, so temperature is ranging between 5 and 15degrees c at the moment. There is a piece of carpet around 3 sides but the front is open so I don’t think it is lack of air circulation. I’m principally putting food in the middle tray, the hamster bedding is going in the tray...

Re: Damaged worms
Had another closer look and whilst no new dead ones, some are not looking as healthy as they should. I have a couple of theories..... whilst there is plenty of food it’s almost as if they don’t have enough base soil material to pass through their bodies, it’s almost as if they are running on empty a...

Re: Damaged worms
Well I have insulation trays above and below my main working tray, both of these are damp and worms are in all three trays plus the lid and the sump. There is condensation in the lid but no leachate per se in the sump, but my wormerie is only in month 4.

Re: Damaged worms
Spotted a couple of perished worms in the sump today. There is no liquid there, but the two that were dead were shrivelled, but not dry. The rest seem fine and there are no smells in there so I don’t think I’m going anoxic. There looked like a head of a worm in the sump too so maybe I have a centipe...

Re: feeding in the middle?
Quick question about the corner feeding method which I employ. Had a bit of a mooch in my main feeding tray tonight and note the corners where I feed are rich in colour, damp and relatively shallow in depth. In the middle of the tray it is much drier, deeper and looks principally like the coir that ...

Re: Adding second tray in cold weather
I see what you mean about the cabbage, I checked it yesterday and it was the same as the day I put it in. I will pop it in the top tray and replace with some banana skin and apple core. I had dropped in some stale niger seed from the bird feeder(small amount) but that is growing like crazy and despi...

Re: tea leaves and wormeries
I wonder about the value of tea leaves as a food source, it feels a waste putting it in a corner. I was thinking of just sprinkling it on top, was thinking it would give my very white bedding material more of brown compost look
