Re: Harvesting a tray
Hi - I set out today to harvest my very first tray. I have two upper trays still being worked through but the bottom one is looking good, nice black crumbly compost and no food, paper or coir remains. However once I started I found a good number of tiny baby worms in it and although I managed to sie...

Re: Curry and spicy food
Hi Greyworm, I've only been worm-farming for just over a year now but have read from many different sources that spicy foods / onions/garlic etc. (also citrus) are best avoided as they can irritate the worms' sensitive skins (also salty, starchy and oily foods not good) so I'm thinking that you prob...

Dampness conditions for hot weather
Hi, hope everyone's worms are doing ok in this hot weather! Would welcome any advice on getting the balance right re. dampness of bedding in these heatwave conditions. To keep my bin cool I've kept adding wet newspaper (also draped cold wet towels over lid). The air temp inside in the shed where the...

Re: Compostable bags
Hi, just to add to this - before I got the wormery I was composting only in a normal 'Dalek' style bin and using compostable bags to hold my waste in our little indoor caddy until ready to put out (the compostable bags were those small green bags specifically designed for this). It was only when I d...

Re: Help! Too many pot worms?
I've only had my wormery 7 months but it all seems to be going very well, and I've been adding a couple of small sprinkles of ground eggshells to every feed as a matter of course. I always chop up the food I give them so it mixes in nicely and I'd read up about the eggshell being good for their dige...

About use of second tray
Hi, may be a silly question but I'm wondering what's best to do having just added a second tray, also to check if I've done it right so far. First tray (now nearly 5 months in) was quite full, plenty of castings, so I've transferred some of those and quite a lot of the newspaper bedding from it into...

Re: Bedding drying out
Thanks Willy, yes, checked again this morning and they're okay, no dead or frozen worms. Used a hot water bottle between bin and bubble wrap yesterday/last night, and a slice of bread on top of their bedding as you suggested, I found a couple of worms under it already - will continue with these addi...

Re: Bedding drying out
Many thanks Willy. Those are great ideas, much appreciated. I'm going out there now, the temps have risen by a few degrees so I'll add some water. I've not seen many worms near the surface so am a bit worried but haven't found any dead worms either - I'll go and do a more thorough check now. Bread a...

Bedding drying out
Hi, in this extremely cold weather (-6 this morning) I'm clucking round my herd like a mother hen at the moment! They're in an unheated shed, wrapped in card, towels and bubble wrap, and dry scrunched up paper under the lid, so doing my best to keep them as warm as I can, as even the temp inside the...

Worm cocoons and feeding area
I use the four corner feeding method - have just spotted some new worm cocoons (exciting!) in the corner I'd normally put the next feed in. Is it okay to still put the food near them, or best avoided? Thanks (and happy new year!)
