Re: 2nd tray added but most of worms still in bottom tray
I have been thinking about my reply of a few minutes ago. I think if you only have two trays the lifting of the top tray by putting a piece of wood for the top tray to be rested on which gives a clear air gap, this will lower the other side down into the casting of the bottom tray, this would help d...

Re: 2nd tray added but most of worms still in bottom tray
Hi Rio, we have all been trying to deal with extreme temperatures over the past few weeks. This could be the reason the herd are refusing to move. The bottom tray will probably be the coolest and most constant temperature of the trays, the worms may feel safe there. We all to some extent depend on t...

Re: Heat management
Mine survived, but I think it was touch and go once or twice. I was having some work done on the house and had to move two bins into a far sunnier position than the normal east facing wall. Today I was glade to wake to a cool wet day here in SW Scotland. I hope everybody else came through the heat o...

Re: Maggots and flys and think my worms are gone...so sad
Hi sorry to hear your news. The first thing to do is remove and dispose of any food left in the bin. Next fluff up (lift it up and mix it) the bedding, this will allow oxygen in to the bin, now check for worms, if there are no worms then you have a chance of the bin recovering from cocoons (worm egg...

Re: Heat management
The big problem with heat is that things go down hill very quickly. Like you so far mine are fine so it’s fingers crossed for a few days. Tomorrow is forecast to be our last really hot day in SW Scotland.

Re: Heat management
If your worms are in a shed try to rig up a clothes line inside, for wet clothes to hang on you will be surprised how much that will help. Obviously leave the door open. If you have or can get some electric to the shed then a fan will be fantastic. I did see a solar fan, I think it was for camping a...

Re: Heat management
Hi, good question. Heat can be far more of a problem than cold. Anything over 30c can kill worms very quickly. If your bin is outside try to move it to a north facing wall. Failing north then east. If you can’t move the bin try to erect some shade anything will help. Cover you bin with wet clothes, ...

Re: Ants in wormery
Hi Xan, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. It’s difficult to understand because we all talk about worms eating the food we provide BUT worms eat very little of what we put in the worm bin, it is in fact eaten by the microbes and bacteria and the worms happily gulp these microscopic workers ...
