RE: Second tray
How full is your first tray? Sounds quite full-but it will compact down a bit as the worms continue to feed through the food.

RE: Getting ready for winter
Thanks WillyWorm. I think I will see if it fits in my coldframe. I've got a new washer (it seems to be leaking), so if that fixes it, will be able to take it inside sonewhere.

Getting ready for winter
I've been wondering for a while what I should do about over wintering the worms. At the moment, they'll be stopping outside. I've read bubble wrap and boiler insulation etc, but if I bubble wrap up the wormery, surely that will cut off the air supply? What does everyone else do?

RE: feeding in the middle?
I have tried this method. The thing is, I keep a stone on my lid (it keeps the plastic make-shift rain guard in place), so when the food layer fills up I was very conscious that I might be squashing out the air as WillyWorm said. Then, after a while, your wet paper starts to get slimy snd break down...

RE: How much to feed
We all read your posts WillyWorm! I tried the just chuck it in method too, but I prefer the WillyWorm method and use that now. And lots of shredded paper to stop the flies!

Re: what is the right amount of wet?
I'm not convinced the flies are fruit flies or fungus gnats - only because of the size as they are 5-10mm long. My experience of fruit flies & fungus gnats are that they are smaller than this - but I'm probably wrong - not very knowledgeable of flies! Anyway, irrespective, all is fine. I don't min...

Re: what is the right amount of wet?
Yeah, wiki gave loads! The george pilkington book talked about bathroom flies, but these look more like moths-not transparent wings like the ones I have. Will see what Ronnie thinks.

Re: what is the right amount of wet?
I thought fruit flies are really small and seem to have almost a 'floating' way of flying? The sort that end up in your red wine? I googled them and the zoomed up pick do look similar, but these are 5-10mm long. The wings look big, transparent still, and they fly up and at you quickly when the lid i...
