RE: eggshells in womery
I never thought of power tools! I use a mortar and pestle. The larger bits (still less than half a mm across) all seem to end up in the sump..

RE: Leachate friend or foe
Doesn't George Pilkington say he puts it back in his wormery unless it's too wet, in which case he throws it on the compost? I've found if I collect regularly by tipping the bin forward to drain as much as possible, it's odour free and I dilute and use on my plants. It's definitely done them good. I...

RE: Checking bottom layers
Thanks WillyWorm. I was also thinking about what you said re overcrowding. When I harvested I removed 2 layers and left 2. Maybe better to go one at a time, although it was like that a couple of weeks or so before the worm crawl. I do learn best from mistakes-hoping covered most potential pitfalls b...

RE: Checking bottom layers
A lot had left, but a lot still remained, which made me think perhaps it was too hot-and those that hadn't escaped settled back down in their bedding when the evening came and the temp dropped again. I did wonder if they didn't like the wood litter. Never thought of deodorisers.. was thinking there ...

RE: Checking bottom layers
Thanks. The tea bags do break down-I only saw a couple maybe when I harvested, and they were delicate tea bag skeletons. Like leaf skeletons. They're certainly not those posh tea bags you can get seem to be paper-maybe with wood fibres? There are a few worms in the sump. Not many though. I might dra...

RE: Checking bottom layers
Well-next update in my terrible worm keeping! A fortnight (I think) ago I experienced mass worm crawl. Never seen that before. Loads on the lid and sides. I wondered if it was still too wet, or that it was starting to get too hot in the greenhouse. It's been outside for a fortnight now. I rescued he...

RE: Tomato seeds
Yeah I've started weeding them out! Think I'll let a few grow, see how they turn out ?

Tomato seeds
I was a bit suspicious that the pepper seeds had germinated so quickly innthe vermicompost. I know it's good that that was crazy good. And the stems looked a but furry (suspiciously like tomatoes) and they weren't growing in the neat rows I'd planted in. Confirmed today as I was rereading George Pil...

RE: Checking bottom layers
Yeah, I've done that in the past. Great tip thanks.
And I love having worms. I can't explain why exactly-just so fulfilling ?? I planted some marigolds in vermicompost and some in multipurpose compost today. A compost-off. Will report back ?

RE: Checking bottom layers
Hey guys - I actually ordered a new wormery last week (finally!) and having squeezed out all the liquid from the coir, I was reminded how low the moisture content should be. I checked the worms today. They seem so much healthier! Energetic with their wiggling. There looked to be more worms, but that...
