Re: Tray gaps

No need to seal the gaps anyway. No self respecting worm want to go out in this weather.

Re: more general wormery in winter questions

Hi, worms do not hibernate but do react to temperature rather than time of year. When worms get cold, about 10c and less they stop eating as much, go off sex, and stop making castings. They appear to turn their thoughts towards survival, at 5c or less they will gather in groups in the warmest place ...

Re: Tray gaps

I fill my feeding tray to the top and keep it at this level until I add another tray. The “what was the feeding tray” reduces quickly to about a third it’s volume. Providing the bottom of the feeding new feeding is in contact with the tray below then there is no need to add more compost unless you w...

Re: Help needed! bugs and keeping a wormery inside

Hi, yea I was a bit freaked at the thought of carpet bugs but I now think lilwriggler is right with “fungus gnats” Fungus Gnats like fruit fly present no problem or risk to you, your family nor your home. But nobody wants to live with a swarm of flies going round them while sitting relaxing at home....

Re: Setting up another worrmery

There is not problem in “seeding” a new bin. It is very important to ensure you transfer some bedding and castings from the old bin to the new one so the worms feel right at home from the start. Try to take a minimum of 500 worms or more to the new bin to get it established quickly. You can take the...

Re: Help needed! bugs and keeping a wormery inside

That’s an impressive looking bin. The thing with a vertical bin is the gaps around the trays allow air and therefore oxygen to get around the setup. Blocking these gaps can result in a greater chance of the bin ending up anaerobic. The gap also allows for the trays to drop down as the worms convert ...

Re: Help needed! bugs and keeping a wormery inside

This is very puzzling. One of the things about carpet beetle is the fact that they don’t like moist damp places and will only eat natural fibres, fur and feather. Our worm bin should be too moist for them and I don’t think there would be enough food for them. So this is good news so is the fact that...
