Surely there are other things you can feed the birds rather than really helpful earth worms ... slugs and snails for instance. Or go to a pet shop, buy some meal worms, put them in a plastic container of bran, and in next to no time you will have a meal worm farm that can feed tonnes of birds and st...

Definately too dry if ants are moving in. Obviously you have the reverse of my problem with rain, so you'll need to add additional water, maybe via a watering can with a rose ... Once you get the moisture level back up to where the worms are happy again, you should find the ants leave. In the meanti...

Thanks for the responses, most helpful. Willy, when I did the initial setup, I fully lined the base of the tray with a doubled thickness of flat paper that went up the sides a good 3 inches. That reminds me of when I had a mouse problem. They (the mice) destroyed a lot of household stuff like curtains etc that they trashed, probably for bedding, including some linen tea towels ... the worms enjoyed those tea towels judging by the fact that there was nothing left after a wee while, so .....
