Re: Bees
Wow! No idea on that one! Are they a honey bee or wild bee? The wild bees will go through their life cycle within a couple of months so you may have a safe window to move (albeit the larvae are unlikely to survive). Honey bees - call a bee keeper. Of course they could be a hoverfly like myathropa fl...

Re: why no weeds?
Seeds are probably the reason. I don’t tend to bother with them and give my wormery worms the finer stuff. My tumbling composter, which has more worms than my wormeries do get weeds at times, that or the compost heap.

Re: Worms stay in bedding tray
Willy is far better on advising things than me, but at the beginning things do start a bit slowly. My recollection of when i first started(granted it was about 3/4 years ago) was i just started with the one tray. Coir tray at the bottom. Soon after i added a second tray above and that was the one fi...

Re: Can I use my wormery to breed earth worms for my garden?
Hi tipsy, there are 3 different types of worms i think. The composting ones we use in wormeries are surface dwellers i.e the top few centimetres of soil/leaf litter, earthworms are a completely different group which live deeper in the soil.

Re: Yellow and black stripes fly in my wormery
They are hoverflies, probably myathropa florea or eristalis sp. Completely harmless, there larvae will have pupated in the wormery, happy addition to the ecosystem, will cause no issues and just fly off

Re: Starting up a Second Wormery
I put empty toilet rolls and egg boxes in dry and whole, within a couple of weeks they are damp at which point i start the process of tearing them up a bit. I try and keep one relatively dry egg box covering each corner, which makes it nice and easy to feed. Stays dark too, when damp and misshapen i...

Re: Hope everyone's worms ok in the cold snap
Mine have done ok in the garage. It didn’t get so cold down here and the carpet insulation kept them cosy enough. I even harvested the bottom tray from each wormery on Christmas eve so that i could restock the top tray with lots of extra dry bedding for extra insulation. I do have a dirth of casting...

Re: Starting up a Second Wormery
What does 2500 worms look like in a wormery? I’m sure i’m looking at a lot less than that in mine, it’s certainly not heaving with worms, good population but not that kind of size.

Re: Starting up a Second Wormery
I found when i started a second wormery, i had a lot more confidence, so i had new worms in the new one and didn’t mix. You may find you have two wormeries with worms trying to escape for the first few days!

Sourced some spent compost, so have topped up both wormeries. Will be very interesting to see how they develop
