Re: Another newbie here in wormcity

Your doing great and have obviously been reading up on worm farming.
Keep all feedings small for a month or two this will allow your bin to come into balance i.e the microbes, bacteria, worms and other bin residents to multiply to a good working number.

Re: Set up problems

Hi welcome to the world of worms. It’s sounds like you have done a great job so far. Escapee’s are always a problem in a new bin. Getting them under a light will be a big help in discouraging them from leaving. You could stand the bin on some corrugated cardboard, any worms that do escape will find ...

Re: Clearing out a wormery

Pot worms look like white worms between 15mm and 25mm (1/2inch and 1 inch) in length. Maggots tend to be shorter/smaller and “dumpier” in shape. If you have pot worms the the reason there are few at the top is because there is more fresh bedding and few castings there. As food and bedding breakdown ...

Re: Clearing out a wormery

Yea you can mix pure worm casting with other worm castings even shop bought compost. The little white things sound like “pot worms” they will help with the composting and are part of the composting process. However to many of them could indicate the ph of the bin is a little acidic and may also be a...

Re: Clearing out a wormery

Hi Leo, the stuff in the sump will be top quality because, it is pure casting not mixed with bedding not feed stuff. But the castings from the sump area are always very wet and will need to be dried out. You need to take care when drying these castings because if dried to much they can go like balls...

Re: Clearing out a wormery

Hi Leo, good to hear from you. Sounds like things in general regarding your worms are going well. The tap in the sump getting blocked is a regular event. The solids you find in the sump are pure castings left there by visiting worms when they poo. The stuff in the tray always contains some compostin...

Re: 6ish Weeks in, what do I do now?

Hi, I would fill the tray to about an inch/2.5cm from the top. Your worms and microbes will continual to break the potting compost down but because it not like paper and cardboard bedding you will have well rejuvenated potting compost anytime you need if and it should prevent some of the wetness and...

Re: 6ish Weeks in, what do I do now?

Hi the suggestion to finish the first tray was based on the fact that I thought you wanted castings soon for your potting on but there is no rush the your idea is good. Maybe you could add more spent potting compost to your second tray to get things moving. You will be wanting as much castings as yo...

Re: 6ish Weeks in, what do I do now?

Hi again red. What you have done with your spent potting compost is effectively rejuvenated them which could make them very useful for adding to your tomato growing mix. In the past I have suggested using them as part of the bedding mix. I think your way will work well. The compact sticky feel of th...

Re: 6ish Weeks in, what do I do now?

Hi red, good to hear from you with your update. Sounds like things are going well. We are now though winter and things are warming up. Things will have seemed slow in your efforts to produce worm castings but bare in mind things are slow in the winter and you were working with an immature set-up. If...
