Bokashi (Japanese for "fermented organic matter") is a mixture of Bran, Molasses and a special ingredient called Effective Microbes (Ems).

Ems are a mixture of bacteria and fungi which when mixed with the other ingredients and scattered over your food waste, will ferment it down, into an excellent soil conditioner.
This can then be fed to worms, put into a compost bin, or simply buried in the garden or layered into pots and hanging baskets.

We love using our bokashi buckets, we simply scrape all the leftover food straight off our plates. Meat, gravy, vegetables - even the remains of our apple crumble. It all goes in with a handful of bokashi bran sprinkled on the top. We recommended this fabulous system to anyone.

Bokashi Bucket - Amazingly Simple To Use.....

• Place some bokashi bran on top of the strainer
• Add your kitchen waste (cut into small chunks)
• Sprinkle a handful of bokashi bran over the top of the waste.
• Press the food down with a potato masher to expel any air
• Replace the lid.
• Continue until full, alternating between a layer of food, then Bokashi Bran
• Draw off any liquid that has accumulated in the sump (dilute 1:100 and use as a plant food)
• Leave the bucket to ferment for around 2 weeks
• When ready the fermented contents will have a pleasant yeasty smell, and can then be placed in a wormery, on a compost bin, or dug straight into the garden

The bokashi will compost down very quickly

According to a study by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (Wrap), households throw away about a third of the food they buy.
About half of the 6.7 million tonnes of food thrown in the bin each year is edible and the rest comprises waste such as peelings and bones.
